The political system in Uganda is a male-dominated environment and this does not make it easy for young women and girls to fully compete. If experience is the best teacher, testimonies of female political leaders from around the world will inspire the next generation of female leaders.
Every woman leader was once a little girl with dreams and ambitions. Role models are crucial when becoming a politician. The feminist leadership training at Global Platform Uganda is a steppingstone for future female politicians and leaders.
Over 75% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 35, and 51% are women. The legal and policy framework for young women’s representation in governance exists but it has done little to address the limited and divided opportunities
The involvement of young women and girls in politics is a necessity in order to achieve gender equality and Global Platform Uganda through empowerment and feminist leadership, creates a unique platform for a newer generation to gain confidence and challenge the patriarchal system and gender norms.
Furthermore, the relatability of young women and girls in politics can inspire participation among other young women who have previously been uninterested or felt marginalized. Though young women are a segment of the population that is often overlooked in the political realm, their participation is vital to a more egalitarian democratic society.
One mode of political participation that is believed among young women is through feminist transformative and connectivity offered by the global Platform Uganda that has allowed for national social cohesion over women and girls issues.
Also, most young people receive information through digital platforms which also creates a greater sense of unity and the platform is committed to continuing to amplify the voices of young women and girls in politics through an ongoing campaign #WomensVoiceUg. The #WomensVoiceUg unveiled structural inequalities faced by women due to their gender and from the voices collected, young women are undoubtedly important to politics. They should participate in politics at all levels. Their voice, interests, and concerns must gain the attention of political institutions, as this is the first step toward universal gender equality.
